The Venerabilis Ordo Sancti Sepulchri, the Sovereign Order of the White Knights of Seborga, does not recognize in Mr. Marcello Menegatto the Prince of Seborga and consequently does not entertain any relationship with him. The same applies to those Associations / Confraternities that pompously claim to be “orders” because recognized by them. These “acknowledgments” given by Mr. Menegatto are devoid of any historical foundation and legal value. According to Italian law they are illegal.
The Venerabilis Ordo Sancti Sepulchri recalls that in 1079 the abbot of the Monastery of Lérins received from the Emperor Henry IV the title of Prince of the Holy Roman Empire, a title also given by Pope Gregory VII (Ildebrando di Soana).
For centuries the population of Seborga has had a firm and sure guide in the name of the Abbot of Lérins, who has always been able to count on the support of the Order of the White Knights. The Princes of Seborga, and the documents testify to this circumstance, have always been an expression of the General Chapter of the monks of Lérins. The charge of Prince in several cases has been placed in the hands of the General Master of the Order of the White Knights. There were no Princes coming from from other sectors. The documents tell us how the residents of Seborga have always taken an oath of loyalty to the feudal lord Abbot during his visits to Seborga.
The Venerabilis Ordo Sancti Sepulchri states that the current situation of a “Prince elected by the subjects” is tragicomic and bears witness to the mental confusion and the abysmal historical ignorance of the characters involved in this affair.
Obviously today citizens residing in Seborga have all the rights to find themselves, organize themselves, discuss anything and everything about anyone; they can also decide to vote for their “Prince”, but this remains at the folkloristic / tourist / operetta level.
Basically those who live in Seborga can do many things, but one thing they can not do: to distort the history. The Principality of Seborga, even after the departure of the last Abbot of Lèrins, has continued to settle on ancient and consolidated noble practices that have granted the Master General of the Order to operate himself “as a prince” or to appoint men of the Order to own trust.
The so called “Prince Marcello I.”, the “Princess Nina”, the “Ministers”, the “Council of the Crown” are all beautiful initiatives that will perhaps serve (we hope) to bring some more tourists in the village but legally they have no meaning or value.
Let us remember that in the past the first citizens of the Castrum Sepulchri were always the Knights / Monks, who defended not only the values of Christianity, but also protected the “Holy Relic” and defended the borders of the Principality from attacks coming from the outside.
The centuries-old history of the Castrum Sepulchri confirms that the Prince has always been chosen by the Abbot of the Monastery of Saint Honorée in Lérins, and later, with the closure of the Monastery, this prerogative passed into the hands of the General Master of the Order.
Now let us come to today: after noting the failure of the Principality’s custody to Mr. Nicolas Mutte, after taking note of how the situation in Seborga increasingly resembles an operetta piece, of how economic interests are undermining and distorting the spirituality that has always been connected to the Castrum Sepulchri, the V.O.S.S., in the last Chapter of 2017 AD took the decision to make use of those prerogatives that history has reserved for him and to entrust “pro tempore” to the General Master Sir Knight Diego Beltrutti Count of San Biagio the post of Prince of Seborga.
